The climbing team after winning the COW trophy at a home scrimmage.

The Boulders Climbing Team

Why? Because we're here... The Boulders Climbing Team climbs with Adventure Rock (Pewaukee, WI), Hidden Peak (Chicago, IL), and Climb On (Homewood, IL) on a regular basis at scrimmages scheduled at each gym, set especially for the teams. Competitions in which teams will participate include the annual ABS (American Bouldering Series) and JCCA events hosted by gyms across the Midwest. When weather and time permit, the team will journey to local climbing areas such as Devil's Lake for a day of top rope climbing. Boulders hopes to provide a friendly and positive atmosphere for the sport of climbing that nurtures physical training along with self-discipline and self-confidence. Team members ages range from nine to eighteen and meet twice a week (Monday & Thursday) from 6:30 PM to 8:30PM. Team members are serious and committed to the sport of rock climbing in all its aspects that range from specific technique to mental and phyiscal training and endurance.

Fall 2001 Roster
Birthday Challenge Model/Coach
Nate Emerson.
Coaches
Head Coach: Yarrow Fewless
Assistant Coaches: Nate Emerson & Patrick Neuman
This year's coaches come from a wide variety of backgrounds. Yarrow Fewless has spent most of his climbing career in such areas as Yosemite Valley, reckoning with everything from big walls to classic granite bouldering. He is currently a student at the University of Wisconsin in mechanical engineering. When he is not spending his time on the slack line, he can be found working on UW's Formula One race car. Nate Emerson is a local to the Madison area, having spent much of his time becoming totally familiar with the climbs and bouldering at Devil's Lake and farther "local" areas such as Southern Illinois and the Red River Gorge. A member of the long ago Barn climbing facility, Coach Emerson enjoys exploring all aspects of climbing training from specific, isolated muscle developement to cross training and birthday challenges. Patrick Neuman was last year's head coach and has spent most of his climbing career being raised at the crags of Boulders Climbing Gym. While less of a specialist than the other coaches, Mr. Neuman provides the heart, soul, and spirit to our ever improving team.

The Ultimate Climb
by Michelle Thompto

The base, you feel it's the safest place to be,
cracks, holes, and edges are all part of the rock,
quietness surrounds you, hear the breeze, the rock is calling you,
you smell dust and dirt,
you feel the hard, rough, cold rock,
excitement, thrill and energy flow through you,

look up, trace your path,
you've done it many times before, you know you can,
You're ready, go for it

you start low, reach high, dyno if you have to,
think feet, don't get tired yet,
you have a long way to go,
use the arete, use the dihedral,
flag, stem, whatever you have to,

you feel the heat of the sun on your back,
you feel the cool breeze on the back of your neck,
you feel your neck tense up,
relax, take a deep breath, you're fine, perfectly fine,

Michelle Thompto on tenuous quartzite.

your life depends on the rope,
the rope lays in your belayer's hands,
trust him, you climb with him often

your heart is racing
you're breathing fast,
you have to clip soon, get a good rest, you've got it,
chalk up, you're only on a 5.9, you climb 5.10s in the gym,
but this is no gym, this is all rock,
release your inner cranking demon and do it,

you're almost there, top out, you're close, finish it
see the anchor,
everyone cheering,
the freshest smell, the purest air, beautiful bliss,
you feel the sweat drip down your back,
relief passes over you,

you're done, you've succeeded, you're a champ,
you're exhausted, you're body aches,
as you're being lowered, you go over in your mind,
the rock, the route, your pain, and your achievement,
you untie, you're rewarded with an ice cold drink,
everyone is so proud of you, you just flashed,
