This competition is designed to celebrate and empower our diverse community of climbers, and to reclaim safe and inclusionary participation in our sport. Because the climbing and outdoor communities have historically been dominated by cis-men, Boulders believes that creating dedicated space for those who may have faced gender-based discrimination is an important step towards a more inclusive community. Flight of the Phoenix aims to be that safe, inclusive space.

Yes! The recreational category is perfect for beginners, and we would love to have you join us! Climbing competitions, and Flight of the Phoenix in particular, are really aimed at building community and climbing awesome climbs. Many competitors come for the fun, rather than the competition.
-
When registering, you have the opportunity to select Recreational (V0-V2 range), Intermediate (V2-V4 range), Advanced (V4-V6), or Open (V6-V8+ range). Additionally, we will have a Star Chaser category, which allows a climber to climb all routes across all categories.
Take this survey to determine which category is the best for you!
-
This is a modified repoint competition, meaning each category (Rec, Intermediate, Advanced, and Open) will have a set number of climbs that climbers will attempt during their climbing session (10am-1pm for Rec, Intermediate, &Star Chaser; 2-5pm for Advanced & Open). These climbs are marked with a “Top” and a “Zone” marker to determine climber score. The top climbers from the Advanced and Open categories will advance to finals, beginning at 6:30 pm. There will be a full review of rules approximately 20 minutes before each climbing session.
-
Pre-registration costs $40 for members, or $50 for non-members. Day-of registration will cost $50 for members and $60 for non-members. Bring your climbing shoes, chalk, comfortable clothes, and a positive attitude on comp day! We also recommend bringing snacks and a water bottle. Later in the day we will have a custom Flight of the Phoenix stamp and white fabric ink available for customizing clothing, so feel free to bring anything you’d like to stamp as well! (dark colors will show the print best)

The top competitors in the Advanced and Open categories will be competing in Finals at 6:30pm. During finals, the strongest competitors of the event will all climb new problems one at a time to compete for prizes. Everyone else watches them and cheers them on, and it's a huge blast! These competitors will all receive prizes!
-
Yes! Spectators are welcome and help bring energy to the climbing day. If you are new to the gym, be sure to fill out a waiver prior to comp day as they will be required to spectate or climb. Spectators are especially encouraged to attend finals, which will begin at 6:30pm.

Boulders was inspired by the strength and power of the mythical animal, as well as the power/beauty of flames. The thought of being reborn through flames into a strong, celebratory being is a demonstration of innate power, the power we are hoping to celebrate here.

We have two co-head setters this year, Erin Hutchison and Ella Palacios! Both Ella and Erin are part of the year-round Boulders setting team and are highly skilled and experienced. They will be joined by a number of additional in-house setters, along with a couple of guest setters who will be joining us from regional gyms. For full setter bios and introductions, make sure to follow along on our Instagram leading up to the event!

Our in-house web designer, Gib created the t-shirt and all other associated artwork and logos. If you have questions or comments on the design, you can reach them at gib@bouldersgym.com.
T-shirts can be purchased for a small additional cost through preregistration, and will be available for regular sale at the competition. Additionally, we will have custom stamps cut and white ink available at the competition, so bring your clothing and make your own custom shirt! (Dark colored garments will allow the ink to show up best).
